LegalPay, a start-up focused on third-party litigation finance, has announced the successful closure of its maiden litigation fund. The Arbitration Focused SPV I, a smaller ticket special purpose vehicle (SPV), designed for upper-retail investors, was launched last month, and has now been oversubscribed, a LegalPay statement said.

The 2021 Tribeca Capital Group Scholarship has concluded, with Joshua Victor declared the winner for his insightful essay on whether litigation finance expands access to justice. His conclusion is that the practice doesn’t always mean justice for those who would otherwise miss out on equitable representation.

An investor group led by asset recovery funder Drumcliffe LLC has purchased 1,138,245 shares in Odyssey Marine Exploration, Inc. (NASDAQ:OMEX) (“Odyssey”), from Epsilon Acquisitions LLC in a private transaction exempt from the registration requirements of the Securities Act of 1933, as amended.

It is estimated that 30,000 plaintiffs still have outstanding suits against Monsanto (a subsidiary of Bayer), claiming the company’s product is directly responsible for making them sick.  Certain cancers are alleged to have been caused by the glyphosate-based herbicide including non Hodgkin lymphoma.

PURE, which currently handles over 12,000 new instructions each year, hopes that this move will dramatically accelerate its ability to develop record numbers of cases over the next few years.

The following piece was contributed by Eric Schuller, President of the Alliance for Responsible Consumer Legal Funding (ARC).  Consumer Legal Funding is when a company provides funds to a consumer who has a pending legal claim, typically a car accident, while their case is making its way through the legal system. The funds are used for household needs such as mortgage, rent, car payments, keeping the light on and putting food on the table. The funds are not used to pay for legal fees associated with the claim or case.

Liti Capital SA , the blockchain litigation finance company, announces an investment of $5 Million. This $5m will be used to purchase assets worth up to a potential $50m. Of the initial private raise of $12m, $10m was used to secure assets worth up to $100m of potential asset value. Once this new $5m is deployed in an asset purchase, the combined $150m potential value dwarfs the current market cap of $25m. Those assets are what back the LITI equity token.

Legal-Bay Pre Settlement Funding reports an expansion to their capital needs now that funding applications are on the rise. In practical terms, enforcement extends beyond being purely a legal process. Much of it involves practical project management, where litigation is one of two key workstreams. The other is influence or persuasion – communications or PR. These two elements are entirely complementary and complimentary.
